Blitz Surf Shop is a Gisborne icon. It is the second oldest established surf shop in New Zealand and has been providing the people of Gisborne, the East Coast and all our welcome visitors with the latest surf gear and fashion since 1983. Blitz changed hands in December 2009 and we plan to continue keeping our valued customers provided with the latest and greatest gear whilst continuing to build our reputation throughout New Zealand and the surfing world.  July 2012 was the time to lead the Gisborne surf shops into the future with the launch of our new online store so we can continue to provide customers from further afield with a great shopping experience.  And most recently at the end of March 2017 we launched our new FREE HD Live Stream surf cam which you can access through our website to see what the swell and wind conditions are like at the southern end of Wainui Beach.  We wanted to provide this service to the public for free to give our thanks for supporting our small local business over the years.  We are extremely grateful.
When you come into Blitz you'll find a friendly, laidback environment with great music playing in the background. Talk to our helpful, knowledgeable staff and we'll provide you with a great shopping experience or just let you know about the latest surf conditions and forecast.
We stock a wide range of new and secondhand surfboards including longboards, high performance shortboards, fishes, SUPs and everything in between for all budgets (check out our current stock of new boards in the surfboard section). We do our best to cover all surfers with good quality, lower priced surfboards for beginners all the way to some of the most sought after premium surfboard brands in the world like Firewire, JS Industries, Slater Designs, Surftech and Hayden Shapes.  There's a great range of wetsuits and surfing accessories from the best selling, most popular brands and there's always plenty of on sale bargains to be found. We also hold a good stock of bodyboards from boards for the little kids right up to the barrel hunting serious lid riders. And we have an enviable skate section of decks, completes, longboards and cruisers.  If there is anything that you are looking for and haven't been able to find then just get in touch and the crew at Blitz will endeavour to get it for you.
Not only do we take our surfing and skating seriously but fashion is our other passion. Whether its summer or winter we'll have the threads on hand to help you look sharp. We've got clothing, footwear, sunglasses and much more from all the major brands and our brand list continues to grow.  We've got some Gisborne exclusives like the beautiful women's clothing and swimwear brand Tigerlily.

So come on down to Blitz Surf Shop where our friendly and knowledgeable staff will be on hand to help provide you with all your surfing, skating and fashion needs.

The first inception of what is now Blitz Surf Shop originally opened as Natural Flight Surf Shop in Derby Street, Gisborne in the summer of 1976 and was owned by Des Delaney. It operated there for several years before briefly moving to Gladstone Rd and then to Wainui Road in 1980 where it can be found standing proudly today.  Pete Natrass was running the Natural Flight surfboard factory for Des before it was sold to Ray Dalton and continued to work there under the new ownership. Mike Spence also briefly worked for Des as the manager of the surf shop before Pete and his wife took over when Des sold the business to them. Pete operated the surf shop until he sold it to Larry Foster in 1983.  Pete then moved to Auckland to once again work with Des and produce Hot Buttered Surfboards which were shaped by Iain Ratso Buchanan.  Mike Spence had moved to Auckland and started a surfing magazine but has now returned to the surf retail industry.

During this time Blitz as a company started trading in 1981 when owned by Pete Nattras while he was making surfboards such as Hot Buttered in Stanley Rd with Ray Dalton. Blitz Surf Shop in its more recent inception was established in 1983 in a small building owned by the bowling club right next to the current building and taken over by Larry Foster. In 1986 Larry bought the New Wave surfboard factory and so Blitz started to stock New Wave surfboards until it was later sold. Blitz was run by Larry until the end of 2009.  Blitz Surf Shop is the second oldest surf shop in New Zealand, the oldest in Gisborne, is a local icon and has been in existence long before all the major surf labels established themselves in New Zealand. So we have witnessed the change to the surfing culture and fraternity that these internationally acclaimed labels have brought.

In December 2009 local Euan Nelson returned home to Gisborne after being away for over 15 years, 9 of which were spent living in The UK and travelling the all over the place, to take over Blitz Surf Shop.  Even with all this time away, places travelled to and people met, Euan still thinks Gisborne is the best place to live in the world!  Euan intends to continue building the legacy of Blitz Surf Shop, growing the business and taking Blitz into the future.  The best part of getting involved in the surf industry for Euan was the chance meeting through business of the woman who he would later convince to move to Gisborne from Auckland and marry in February 2015, Tamera.  Tamera now is firmly in control over the running of the business and helped us move from strength to strength.

But most importantly, even with all this talk of work, we all intend to continue surfing!
